The Fall's Mark E. Smith Dies Aged 60

Wednesday, 24 January 2018 Written by Huw Baines

Mark E. Smith has died aged 60.

The leader of the Fall had been unwell for some time, resulting in a series of gig cancellations towards the end of last year.

The news was confirmed in a statement from Pamela Vander, the band’s manager, through Fall News and Cherry Red, their label.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.

Smith was the Fall’s sole constant member throughout the post-punk band’s prolific career, which began with ‘Bingo-Master’s Break Out!’ in 1978. Released in 2017, ‘New Facts Emerge’ was their 32nd LP.
