Manchester Orchestra Release Documentary and 'Black Mile Demos' EP

Friday, 29 June 2018 Written by Helen Payne

Manchester Orchestra have released a new documentary.

I Know How To Speak offers a look into the making of their 2017 album 'A Black Mile To The Surface'. The Ted Roach-directed film shares its name with the Atlanta band's latest single and is accompanied by the release of 'The Black Mile Demos' EP.

Singer and guitarist Andy Hull said of the announcement:

"Today we are releasing two projects at once, something that we have never done before. First, a fly on the wall glimpse of the process of making this album -- the good and the bad, the ups and the downs. I Know How to Speak encompasses the wide range of emotions that the studio process brings, and we hope you enjoy seeing the work behind the scenes. We are also releasing a collection of these songs’ original demos in their earliest, rawest form. The Black Mile Demos are the seeds of how this all started. The initial, rough-around-the edges recordings, done with one microphone in some distant and often strange locations before they were continued to be worked on in Asheville, NC at Echo Mountain studio.”

I Know How To Speak is available to watch through the band's website, while you can check out the the new EP below.

Having toured and collaborated with a diverse selection of musicians ranging from St. Vincent to Deerhunter, the Welsh musician and producer could loosely be described as trading in sprawling alt-folk, but that would only tell half the story. On her newest record, ‘Reward’, Le Bon creates a unique world indebted to new wave and jazz as much as it is to contemporary pop and folk acts—all with her own idiosyncratic twist.

Following the amicable departure of founding drummer Josh Wells and vocalist Amber Webber, Stephen McBean and Jeremy Schmidt began working on new music that might have eventually fallen under a new name. But that wasn’t to be.
