Octavian has won the BBC Sound of 2019.

The France-born Londoner and Essie Gang frontman joins a list of previous winners including Jack Garratt, Years & Years, Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Ray BLK and last year's winner Sigrid.

According to the BBC he is the first rapper to win the prize since 50 Cent took it home in 2003. Speaking with them, he said:

"That's lit,. I don't even know how to feel right now... Mum, I made it!

A year ago I was poor, I had no money. But I was never depressed. I was never in the mode to give up. Around me it was bad, but I kept motivated.

If I can get this, I can get anything. 2019 is going to be a great year."

Rosalia took fifth place in the poll, with Northampton's slowthai coming in fourth, singer-songwriter Grace Carter taking third place and King Princess placing second.

Octavian will bring his European Space Party to Manchester, London, Birmingham and Dublin on February 27 and 28 and March 2 and 4 respectively. Tickets are on sale now.
