Black Keys' Patrick Carney Returns With New Band Sad Planets, Shares Debut Single Not Of This World

Thursday, 21 February 2019 Written by Helen Payne

Patrick Carney of the Black Keys has returned with a new band, Sad Planets.

Joined by John Petkovic of Guided By Voices, the duo will put out their debut album under the moniker, ‘Akron, Ohio,’ on April 19 through Tee Pee Records. The album is set to feature a guest appearance from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and focuses on the decline of their Midwest hometown into the 20th century, while celebrating the wealth of music that came out of it, such as Devo, the Cramps, Chrissie Hynde and Tin Huey.

Sad Planets’ debut single, Not Of This World, is a psychedelic rock track that takes the most raucous elements of their other bands, and blends them into a new, distinctly American sound, while experimenting with country, fuzzy guitars, and spaced out synthesisers. Petkovic said:

“When Patrick asked if I wanted to come to Akron to jam with him in the studio, I saw it as a chance to work with a longtime friend, but also an opportunity to reconnect with Akron in a very different way.”

‘Akron, Ohio’ tracklist:

1. Just Landed
2. Not of This World
3.Yesterday Girls
4. City Ghosts
5. Bad Cells
6. Want You to Want You
7. (Falling into the Arms of a) Refugee
8. Long Goodbye
9. Heaven’s Devils
10. Disappearing

The Black Key's latest album was 2014's 'Turn Blue'.
