Phantom Planet Return With First New Single In Over A Decade Balisong

Wednesday, 08 May 2019 Written by Jon Stickler

Phantom Planet have announced they've reformed with the release of their first new music in 11 years.

Balisong is the first single to be shared from the Los Angeles quartet's forthcoming fifth album, which the band are currently working on. The upbeat track combines elements of hard rock with indie and alternative music, and is inspired by an obsession with the butterfly knife, hence the cover art viewable below.

The group last released an album in 2008, when they dropped 'Raise The Dead'. Speaking to Billboard, who premiered the track, frontman Alex Greenwald said:

"It's exciting and it is a bit unexpected -- especially just how quickly this snowballed. It's cool people remember us and want to hear more from us. I have friends who when I brought up that we were gonna make a record they were like, 'Oh! Fuckin' finally!' They didn't want to bring it up before, but obviously they were hoping for it."

The reunion comes as Phantom Planet celebrate the 25th anniversary of their formation. Greenwald added:

"We've surprised ourselves with how easy and how much fun and exciting it is to play together, still. I’m very excited about what the future holds for this."

The band scheduled to perform at Tulsa's Hanson’s Hop Jam Festival on May 19, with further dates set to be lined up soon.
