Gruff Rhys Announces New Solo Album 'Pang!' And Shares Title Track

Wednesday, 10 July 2019 Written by Jon Stickler

Gruff Rhys has announced a new solo record.

'Pang!' will arrive on September 13 via Rough Trade and follow up the Super Furry Animals frontman's 2018 LP 'Babelsberg'.

Sung entirely in Welsh with a couple of verses of Zulu and an English title, 'Pang!' was recorded over the last 18 months in Cardiff and produced and mixed by electronic artist Muzi in Johannesburg. Rhys said:

"Pang! Is a Welsh language song with an English title. It started life as a folk reel and soon expanded into a ‘list’ song, listing various reasons for pangs; hunger, regret, twitter, pain, bad design etc. Using the English word pang in a Welsh language track may appear weird but I suppose it’s like using the French word ‘Magazine’ in an English song. In that it’s slightly pretentious but completely acceptable."

The prolific singer-songwriter has also shared the Mark James-directed video for the album's title track, a driving song featuring a wide range of instrumentation.

Ahead of the release, Rhys appears at Bluedot Festival, Deer Shed Festival and Cambridge Folk Festival this summer. He also supports Stereophonics at their huge gig in Swansea on July 13.
