Post Malone - Hollywood's Bleeding (Album Review)

Wednesday, 11 September 2019 Written by Milly McMahon

With two successful albums to his name, Post Malone has now released his most thought-provoking work to date with ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’. Taking time to reflect on his direction and values, it feels like an epiphanous moment in the multi-platinum artist’s 0-100 career.

Opening with the highly dramatised title track, Post delivers a call to arms, naming and shaming the city that makes and breaks spirits and souls. Supported by some of the hip hop community’s most influential voices, ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’ calls on contributions from Kanye West, SZA, Meek Mill, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Swae Lee, DaBaby and, crossing the genre divide into the heavy stuff, Ozzy Osbourne.

Post’s music is the perfect millennial muse right now. Representing a very real and emotional snapshot into everyday life, ego, sadness, obsession, insecurities and heartbreak, it switches things up in concert with some new stylistic touches.

Allergic is Post’s brilliant take on doo wop, while A Thousand Bad Times continues on this pop-tinged journey, suggesting that he thrives in this spirit of reinvention. Circles introduces a Mac DeMarco mood, moving through nostalgic, relaxed feelings.

Experimenting with expansive production techniques, Post also slides back to his signature sound with finesse. Die For Me, featuring Halsey and Future, dips into more familiar, darker undertones. Creating songs that tell stories and feel authentic, despite an uncensored take on struggle and hedonism, an endearing vulnerability resonates from Post’s voice and words.

The album feels like an attempt to press pause on his spiralling and destructive habits, and it is couched in warnings. Post speaks of the loss of his friend and mentor Mac Miller, discusses the fame machine responsible for platforming stars and contributing to the tragic fates of so many young people and, on Internet, the risks invited by a life lived purely online. Littered with profound messages, ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’ is deep.
