Converge's Jacob Bannon Introduces New Metal Supergroup Umbra Vitae

Thursday, 02 April 2020 Written by Sophie Williams

Jacob Bannan of Converge has confirmed details of his new death metal supergroup.

Named after a 1913 Georg Heym poem, Umbra Vitae comprises of guitarists Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, Hatebreed) and Mike McKenzie (the Red Chord), bassist Greg Weeks (the Red Chord) and drummer Jon Rice (Job For A Cowboy).

In an exclusive interview with hard rock magazine Revolver, Bannon explained that the band is, “the closest thing [he's] done that’s rooted in more traditional death metal, at least in terms of speed and ferocity and heaviness.”

In conjunction with the official announcement, Umbra Vitae have released their blistering debut single, Return To Zero. The track builds upon sudden bursts of heavy riffs and glitchy industrial flourishes as it blitzes its way through two and a half minutes of caustic death metal.
