Michael Kiwanuka has won the Mercury Prize 2020 for his third album, ‘Kiwanuka'.
Released in November 2019 through Polydor and Interscope, he fought off competition from Anna Meredith, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Georgia, Kano, Lanterns On The Lake, Laura Marling, Moses Boyd, Porridge Radio, Sports Team and Stormzy to succeed last year’s winner, Dave, who took home the gong for his debut album, ‘Psychodrama’.
The winner was initially due to be announced on September 10 at the Eventim Apollo in London, with BBC Music providing live TV and radio coverage. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it was revealed on the BBC’s The One Show.
The judges for the 2020 edition were Anna Calvi, Annie Mac, Danielle Perry, Gaz Coombes, Gemma Cairney, Jamie Cullum, panel chair Jeff Smith, Jorja Smith, Mike Walsh, Phil Alexander, Tshepo Mokoena, and Will Hodgkinson. Due to COVID-19, the deliberations were conducted via Zoom a day before the announcement, instead of on the day with all the judges in the same room.
