The frontman for Children Of Bodom passed away at his home in Helsinki, Finland during the last week of December 2020, though an exact date and cause of death has not been revealed.
A press release from the band's label, Nuclear Blast, stated: "Laiho had suffered from long-term health issues during his last years."
Laiho founded the Finnish melodic death metal band with drummer Jaska Raatikainen in 1993. Over the course of their career, they released 10 studio albums, the last being spring 2019's 'Hexed'. In December of the same year, the band played their final show at Helsinki Ice Hall, Finland.
The renowned guitarist and vocalist went on to create Bodom After Midnight with his former bandmate Daniel Freyberg, as well as Mitja Toivonen and Waltteri Väyrynen. The quartet recorded three tracks and one music video that will all be released posthumously. They said:
"We are crushed by the sudden passing of our dear friend and band member. Words cannot describe this shock and the profound sadness that we feel."
"Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are eternally broken," said his wife Kelli Wright-Laiho in a statement. His sister added: "We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these hard times. My little brother's funeral will take place privately."
