Diet Cig have unveiled a cover of Metallica's The Unforgiven.
The striking version deviates far from the original cut, with the duo offering up fuzzed-out indie-pop guitars and crashing percussion building to a dramatic crescendo. It arrives along with a country-tinged bi-lingual take on the song by Ha*Ash, and a soulful rendition by Vishal Dadlani, Divine, and Shor Police, fusing elements of pop, rock and hip hop. Metallica have also dropped a rough mix of the cut.
The tracks will appear on 'The Metallica Blacklist', an upcoming tribute album celebrating the 30th anniversary of the iconic thrash band's self-titled record, aka 'The Black Album', which went on to sell over 23 million copies worldwide.
Other acts among the 53 artists covering songs include Biffy Clyro and OFF! with their spins on Holier Than Thou, St Vincent's abrasive revamp of Sad But True, Sam Fender's stripped back piano-based interpretation of the same song, which was separately reworked by Jason Isbell. Miley Cyrus has also reimagined Nothing Else Matters with WATT, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo and Chad Smith, while Latin star Juanes' took on Enter Sandman.
The charity release will arrive digitally on September 10 via Metallica's own imprint, Blackened Recordings. Proceeds from the collection will go to charity. Head here for further details.
Metallica will perform at the Atlanta weekend concert series ATLive this November. They also top the bill at Firenze Rocks in Italy, Prague Rocks and Madrid's Mad Cool Festival in summer 2022.
Diet Cig released their sophomore LP, 'Do You Wonder About Me?' in May 2020. They'll play four US shows in October with special guests Retirement Party.
