Lee Scratch Perry Dies Aged 85

Monday, 30 August 2021 Written by Laura Johnson

Lee Scratch Perry has died aged 85.

The Jamaican singer-songwriter, musician and legendary producer hailing from Kendal passed away in a Lucea hospital in North Jamaica, according to the Jamaican press, though no cause of death has been reported.

Born in 1936, Perry is recognised as a pioneer of dub music and a developer of reggae, having worked with the likes of Bob Marley, among other iconic names. He was renowned for his innovative production style and studio techniques.

Over the years, Perry released countless records, singles, and collections both as a solo artist and alongside his band The Upsetters, as well as collaborating with some of reggae, ska and dub’s biggest names.

His dedication to live music never waned, even in his later years, with a UK tour lined up for this November that was set to head to grassroots venues across the country.

Tributes have poured in from across the music community, including messages from Diplo, Busta Rhymes, Trojan Records, Gilles Peterson, and William "Bootsy" Collins, to name a few.
