Fontaines D.C. enjoyed a precipitous rise. Coming around at a time when the post-punk explosion in the UK was hitting its peak, their 2019 debut album ‘Dogrel’ saw them bring the grey skies of Dublin straight into our ears.
They portrayed their home city in a complex light of love and honesty, painting a picture of a flawed place that was fun, confrontational and multifaceted. They quickly followed it up with 2020’s ‘A Hero’s Death’, which found vocalist Grian Chatten grappling with the vagaries of youth.
In the context of those chapters, ‘Skinty Fia’ is the mark of a band striding out on their own and navigating their sense of Irishness in a new way.
The band have moved to London, and this has shifted their perspectives as they embrace their heritage in a city that fosters both the comfort of Irish bars and the negative stereotypes that still pervade the English mindset.
The track I Love You serves a double meaning—on one side a passionate declaration of love for another and on the other it’s a paean to their home that shares so much affection for the land but plenty of disdain for the ways in which it is wasted.
There’s a real maturity to ‘Skinty Fia’ that finds Chatten on top form, his vocals bolder than ever and his songwriting as beautiful as it can be instantly devastating.
He has challenged himself to approach topics in new ways and you can feel that on Jackie Down The Line, which embodies the persona of someone who thrives on the ways they can hurt people. This is a step up for a band who are writing rock music of the highest order.
