Nova Twins - Supernova (Album Review)

Wednesday, 22 June 2022 Written by Huw Baines

There are a lot of bad records made by great live bands. In fact, being called a ‘great live band’ is a pretty savage burn when wielded correctly. Nova Twins have a particularly high bar to clear as a recording act given that they are a truly seismic live proposition, but their second LP ‘Supernova’ does so with a flourish.

The duo—guitarist-vocalist Amy Love and bassist-vocalist Georgia South—play a blend of punk and metal that also displays vibrant seams of EDM and hip hop, prioritising crushing basslines and rapid shifts in pace and tone that are held together by slick musicianship and a surplus of charisma.

Offering an amped up reboot of the sounds heard on their 2020 debut ‘Who Are the Girls?’, Antagonist boasts a riff for the ages and a line in punchy Prodigy-style electronics, feeding seamlessly into Cleopatra, which leads with a thudding kick drum and ramps up the tension before its explosive chorus.

Its lyrics—inspired by the groundswell of support for Black Lives Matter following the murder of George Floyd—are particularly pointed given the regular reminders delivered by Love and South of the sometimes frosty welcome they received as women of colour operating in the rock sphere: “Blacker than the leather that's holding our boots together. If you rock a different shade, we come under the same umbrella.”

There are bold choices scattered all over the place on ‘Supernova’, from the jarring industrial shudder that interrupts the hook of closer Sleep Paralysis to the lurching, disquieting dynamics of A Dark Place for Somewhere Beautiful, but they are held in place by Love and South’s anything goes approach. That element of surprise is something that some bands lean on in place of melody or a firm grasp on pacing, but here it’s just another string to Nova Twins’ bow. They are the real deal.
