Ethan Barnett isn’t the first musician to find creative fuel in splitting from a major label, and his excellent second album as Ten Tonnes suggests he won’t be the last. After parting ways with Warner Music, had the chance to reevaluate and reclaim a sense of agency. ‘Dancing, Alone’ maintains the charming indie of his self-titled debut while presenting a more mature and seasoned sound.
What separates Barnett from most of his peers is his ability to tap into the sort of magic that knits festival crowds together under summer sunshine—something that musicians spend years searching for without finding.
Monday Morning and Heart To Break bring longing and heartfelt love notes to the table while the title track is a playful one for the weekly student club night packaged with a rousing chorus to be yelled in harmony beneath the lights.
The singer-songwriter shows that it's not all tongue in cheek naughtiness with Lone Star, an emotional ballad held up by solemn acoustic strokes and silky vocals, and Waiting For The Sun, where he melds heartbreaking poetry with meditative pacing that catches you at your most vulnerable.
Ten Tonnes hasn’t tried to break any indie rules but he has certainly matured as a person and artist. His unguarded moments are more painful than before but cleverly countered by a sense of independence and mindfulness that might make him last longer in a competitive field than most.
