The Lumineers will release their fifth studio album next month.
'Automatic' is set to arrive through Dualtone Records on February 14, following up 2022's 'Brightside' and last year's live album, 'Live From Wrigley Field'.
To coincide with the news, the two-time Grammy-nominated alt-folk band from Denver have shared the project's lead single, Same Old Song, an urgent yet introspective track that shows off their signature stripped-back folk-rock style with piano and guitar. Written by co-founders Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, it comes paired with a video directed by Anaïs LaRocca.
Recorded in less than a month, with the studio set-up inspired by Peter Jackson's 2021 Beatles documentary Get Back, Schultz and Fraites took to the tracking room at Utopia Studios Bearsville in Woodstock, New York with two drum kits, three different pianos, a variety of guitars, amplifiers and vocal microphones, allowing them to capture the organic energy of the new material.
Additionally, for the first time, the band are credited as the album's co-producers, alongside Simone Felice and David Baron, with the latter also engineering and mixing, just like he did for the band’s last two records. On the record's themes, Schultz said:
"This album marks 20 years of songwriting between Jeremiah and me. The album explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, like the increasingly blurry line between what’s real and what’s not, and the variety of ways we numb ourselves while trying to combat both boredom and overstimulation."
Fraites added: "People who think they have our number, they’ll be surprised."
The Lumineers will support the album with a previously scheduled UK and European tour in the spring. Tickets are on sale. North American dates will be announced soon.
