Japanese Breakfast have announced their fourth studio album.
'For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)', the follow-up to 2021's 'Jubilee', will arrive on March 21 via Dead Oceans. A press release states that the Greek myth The plight of Icarus is among the core themes that run through the album, along with other "condemned ones" where characters are taken through "cycles of temptation, transgression, and retribution."
"I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted," primary songwriter and vocalist-guitarist Michaelle Zauner said of the material. "I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die."
Recorded at the famous Sound City in Los Angeles and produced by Grammy-winner Blake Mills, the record is previewed by the strings-laden lead single Orlando In Love, which finds Zauner and band showcasing a more gothic guitar-pop sound. The song's title is a riff on Italian Renaissance author Matteo Maria Boiardo's unfinished epic poem, Orlando innamorato.
Japanese Breakfast will perform at Coachella in Indio, California in April, followed by the first North American leg of the Melancholy Tour. They'll tour Europe in the summer, including stops in Manchester, Glasgow and London between June 29 and July 3, before a second run of North American dates in August and September. Both North American legs will feature support from Ginger Root. Tickets for all dates go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (January 10).
