The Walkmen lead singer will release 'This Side Of The Island', on March 7. Eight years in the making, and co-produced by Leithauser with Aaron Dessner and Leithauser's wife Anna Stumpf, the project offers a notable switch in style, with Leithauser introducing a more groove-led, bassy sound.
It was completed at Dessner's upstate Long Pond Studio in spring 2024, with The National multi-instrumentalist contributing to almost every song, including the recently shared title track, and a new single titled Knockin' Heart, a guitar-driven rock offering. Leithauser said:
"Knockin’ Heart is sung by an estranged, stoned lover on their way home, who is dying to get a message through to someone who is probably not listening. It is ‘I will love you for life if you’ll let me.’ I wrote and recorded it one evening and put it away for over a year. I knew I liked it, and I didn’t want to mess anything up by trying to perfect it. It was the last song I played for Aaron when we got together, and the first song he helped me work on. I’d say he raised the ceiling and lowered the floor on the entire thing sonically. He actually used a funny bass technique he said he’d used on a Taylor Swift song, which I got a kick out of. I gotta say his bass sounds fantastic. Now there are three basses on it! One of mine and two of his. That is a first for me."
Hamilton Leithauser will return to New York’s Café Carlyle in the spring for his seventh annual residency, with 15 intimate shows lined up in March. He'll also play a London show at EartH on February 17. Tickets are on sale now.
Leithauser's second solo album, 'The Loves Of Your Life', was released in 2020. That same year, he put out a live record, 'Live! at Café Carlyle', which he followed up with 2022's 'Dear God', a collaborative record with Paul Maroon. The Walkmen, meanwhile, reformed in 2023 for North American and UK dates billed as the Revenge Tour.
Hello world, I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally announce that my new record, This Side of the Island, will be out on March 7th. 🥳🍾 I cannot wait for you to hear the whole thing. I worked on it for eight years… yes, 8. pic.twitter.com/m9xf5H0Jlq
