In a statement, his management that said that the musician, "passed away peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness with family by his side."
Buckler (pictured centre) was part of the hugely influential British rock band for 10 years, from its formation in 1972 until they broke up in 1982 after six albums and 18 consecutive top 40 singles. Playing alongside bass player Bruce Foxton and singer-songwriter and guitarist Paul Weller, they scored four UK number ones; Going Underground, Start!, Town Called Malice, and Beat Surrender.
Both Weller and Foxton paid tribute to their late bandmate, posting separate statements on social media. Weller wrote: "I'm shocked and saddened by Rick's passing. I'm thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey! We went far beyond our dreams and what we made stands the test of time. My deepest sympathy to all family and friends."
Foxton added: "I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs. I'm glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did. My thoughts are with Leslie and his family at this very difficult time."
The Jam never fully reunited, but Foxton and Buckler subsequently played together on a number of occasions in a new band called Sharp. Buckler also released three singles with the band Time UK in the mid '80s, before leaving the music industry in the mid '90s to become a carpenter.
