Mahalia has announced a new EP.
'Luvergirl' is a seven-song project that will arrive on August 15. It finds the BRIT and Grammy-nominated British artist channelling contemporary soul while embracing her Afro-Caribbean roots, having grown up with a Jamaican mother in Leicester.
Co-written with Eric IV, BenjiFlow, and Savannah Jada during sessions across the UK, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent, it'll include her recent single Instructions, as well as earlier tracks Different Type Of Love with Masicka, Pressure Points featuring Lila Iké, and Pick Up The Pace with Bayka.
Reflecting on her experience in the Caribbean music scene, Mahalia said: "It was really important for me to be able to tap into that world. And it’s quite special to hear my voice in that way."
On the EP, she added: "It feels like the era of girls just taking back a bit of our fucking control, you know, not being slut-shamed, not being taken the piss out of, not being told that we can't do. It’s not that I'm talking about all those issues in the music, but that's where I was at when I was creating it. And it's funny because in all the songs, really and truly, it's me telling these men what to do in a sense."
Last month, Mahalia headlined the Friday night of the Little Simz-curated Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre in London.
She released her sophomore album, 'IRL', in 2023.
