It’s not even been nine months since ‘Chromakopia’ landed and we have yet another album from Tyler, the Creator. Even by his prolific standards — that’s nine albums now, and three in the past four years — this is unprecedented, especially when you take into account the aesthetics and themes he meticulously crafts for each album.
But ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’ was a surprise in more ways than one. Announced with just three days’ notice, there was no protracted release schedule, no cryptic teasers to a whole new immersive world of Tylerisms, just a bunch of Brooklyn billboards and three tenets: “1. Body Movement. No Sitting Still.; 2. Only Speak in Glory. Leave Your Baggage at Home.; 3. Don’t Tap the Glass.”
Those same directions open the record and place the listener in some sort of moving museum — as in “please keep arms and legs inside the car” — before swan-diving into Tyler’s trademark mix of brash basslines, off kilter synths and a cavalcade of voices and flows.
As an opener, Big Poe is utterly irresistible and ensures listeners will not sit still, especially once Pharrell Williams joins the fray, spitting about liking “crew necks, polos and chinos”, alongside a sample of Busta Rhymes’ Pass The Courvoisier Part II.
Even outside of the Pharrell feature, ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’ feels like a love letter to The Neptunes. Sugar On My Tongue is ‘Wolf’-era Tyler delivering hooks that N*E*R*D would be proud of, and the production that shines throughout.
The overall feeling is that Tyler is having a great time. He’s doing what he wants, on his own terms and, yes, without any baggage. Mommanem, for example, is infuriating in its continuous build without dropping the beat, but you know it’s that way by design, to troll the fanbase. The way Don't Tap That Glass becomes Tweakin’, meanwhile, is just good, dumb fun.
Don’t You Worry Baby could pass for a ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’ offcut and starts a trio of more refined, emotive tracks that close the album. But, at just 29 minutes, ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’ stands as one of Tyler’s most repayable and easily digestible records to date. This is the work of a man at the top of his game, showing that he can still do whatever the hell he wants.
