Alpha Male Tea Party have announced their first album in five years.
The Liverpool math-rock band will release 'Reptilian Brain' through Big Scary Monsters on October 3, following up 2020's 'Infinity Stare'. While maintaining their signature heavy riffs and intricate melodies, the record introduces more emotional weight to their sound. Vocalist-guitarist Tom Peters said:
"It started to become clear that we wanted to use our voices to speak more directly. We found ourselves feeling like we had more to say and communicating that through music alone wasn’t enough anymore."
On recording with producer Mark Roberts, known for his work with Black Peaks, Delta Sleep and Vower, Peters added: "With the other changes we've made on this record, we wanted to try something new and it’s been one of the best things we’ve done as a band. For me, I really just wanted to take a step back from the production and hand the reins over to someone else so I could concentrate on being a musician and it was the best decision we could have made."
To mark the announcement, the trio have released A Terrible Day To Have Eyes, one of their most emotionally intense tracks yet, which blends poignant lyrics with crunching riff-heavy grooves in a shift from their earlier instrumental math-rock roots.
"A Terrible Day to Have Eyes is a song about the permanent and inescapable trauma that is inflicted in moments of sudden grief," explained Peters. "It comes from a very specific story (that I'll be keeping to myself) I was once told that had a profound effect on me when I was younger.
"The song title came first, as is often the case with us, and it brought that story right back into my mind when I was writing the lyrics. Despite being about something so specific, I like to think it's applicable to lots of different human experiences, especially in this incredibly fragile and violent landscape we currently find ourselves in. It's my personal favourite on the record and all comes together with a nice song-a-long at the end, everyone loves one of those."
The band returned in July with the single Battle Crab, which also features on the album, news of which arrives ahead of their appearance at ArcTanGent festival in Somerset next week (August 15).
