Jay Som, the musical project of Melina Duterte, has shared a new single.
Built on drum machine beats and ethereal vocals, with backing from Lexi Vega of Mini Trees, Cards On The Table opens the Los Angeles-based artist's first album in over six years, 'Belong', due out on October 10 via Lucky Number. Commenting on the dreamy electro-pop track, she said:
"Cards On The Table is my favorite song on Belong! It’s about the shifting nature of friendships and how devastating conflict can be in platonic relationships when you feel misunderstood by each other. I think it’s a universal experience to navigate that type of dynamic. It feels like a never-ending cycle of people walking in and out of your life, but it ultimately leads to self-discovery and growth."
Previously, the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer shared the first single from the record, Float featuring Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins, which was backed by A Millions Reasons Why. Paramore's Hayley Williams also appears on cut Past Lives.
Jay Som will support 'Belong' with her first run of Stateside headline dates in over five years in November and December, following gigs supporting Lucy Dacus in Vancouver and Berkeley later this week. She released her sophomore album, 'Anak Ko', in 2019, and in 2021 put out the 'Doomin' Sun' album with Palehound under the joint moniker Bachelor.
Since then, she's earned production credits on Boygenius' Grammy-winning album 'The Record'and Dacus' most recent LP, 'Forever Is a Feeling'. She also toured with Boygenius and has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Troye Sivan, No Rome and Beabadoobee.
