Example Pathes Way For Commercial Success

Following in the footsteps of Dizzee Rascal and his domination of Brit Rap on the commercial scene, comes Example. Fresh from his late 2009 tour with Lily Allen, new single out now and an up-and-coming Feb support slot with pint sized Tynchy Stryder; the Hammersmith born London rapper appears to have cut his corner with the same tools that built Dizzee & Tynchy’s empire before him.

“Won’t Go Quietly” is a slice of modern pop, laced with Example’s witty rapping and leading with infectious beats. In its simplest form, it’s a blend of commercial dance music and hip hop. As Example speaks his mind about an obsessive relationship with a woman “won’t go quietly”, the tune pounds in the background, dragging your mind down a dark alley and seducing your body to move to the music.

You can’t help but worry that he’s given up his previous cheeky chappy persona seen in his debut 2007 release “What We Made” (check out the excellent Vile mock reply to Lily Allen’s Smile). Instead, he has followed a path that could’ve possibly turned him into a product of today’s chart and public demand; something that can sap charm and individuality.

His new album, of the same name as his single, hits the shelves in April and could see Example break through into the UK charts and regular commercial radio play. True, it has all the potential to be infectious and enjoyable. But it also may lack charisma and an original edge, becoming more a case of following by example, rather than leading.
