Cartoon pop group Gorillaz are set to be replacing Irish rock giants U2 at Glastonbury this summer.
It has been a massive past few months for Gorillaz, the digital outfit returned to the spotlight with their third album ‘Plastic Beach’ being released to critical acclaim as well as hitting the road to showcase their new material at a number of live shows and festival appearances.
Things are being taken up another notch with Gorillaz now being named as the headlining replacement for U2 at Worthy Farm’s Glastonbury festival this summer.
Following news being announced the other day that Bono had undergone emergency back surgery, U2 were forced to cancel a number of North American dates as well as their headline show at Glastonbury. Since the news broke, rumors were rife as to who would be replacing Bono and Co as the Friday night headliner.
With the search now over, Gorillaz frontman Murdoc explained, “We’re like some great big horrible warship pulling in to the Bay of Glastonbury to save the day. It was us or The Beatles and they split up years ago. The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it’s up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out.”
The Gorillaz frontman continued, “I can assure you though, I’m bringing extra troops. Loads of them. Glastonbury will be ours…cutlasses drawn, trumpets ready. We’re coming in…”
With former Clash punk idols Mick Jones and Paul Simonon now playing as part of the live band, past performances by the Gorillaz have seen some pretty impressive guest appearances from the likes of Bobby Womack, Mos Def and De La Soul all joining the group onstage.
Festival organiser Michael Eavis is said to be delighted with the decision of Gorillaz taking over the Pyramid stage on Friday night. “This is going to be Gorillaz’ only UK festival appearance, and it’ll be a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid on the Friday night, with Muse, then Stevie Wonder to follow.”
The Glastonbury Festival takes place between June 23rd and June 27th.
