Sziget is one of Europe (and the world's!) largest music and arts festivals. Taking place on Budapest's Óbudai-sziget - appropriately transformed into the 'Island of Freedom' every August - the festival welcomes 'szitizens' from over 100 nations to come together and celebrate all forms of different culture, race, tastes and interests in one place.
The festival was started in 1993, originally called Diáksziget (Student Island). This first event was organised by music fans in their spare time and ran well over budget, taking until 1997 to repay the losses. From 1996 to 2001 it was sponsored by Pepsi and renamed Pepsi Sziget. It has been called Sziget Fesztivál ("Island Festival") since 2002.
Celebrated and awarded for its line-up, Sziget took home the award for best 'Line-Up of the Year' at the European Festival Awards 2017 for the second year running.
Back with its bill of a variety of genres for another year in 2018, Sziget has confirmed the first headliners as Kendrick Lamar, Kygo, Mumford & Sons and Liam Gallagher. Joining them on the line-up are Bastille, Clean Bandit, The Kooks, Zara Larsson, MŘ, Blossoms, Wolf Alice, Nothing But Thieves, Slaves, Everything Everything, Above and Beyond, Cigarettes After Sex, Lewis Capaldi and many more.
