Rihanna Equals Elvis Presley’s Record As She Reaches The UK Top Spot

Monday, 10 January 2011 Written by James Conlon

R&B star Rihanna has made history this week by achieving her fifth UK Number One single in five consecutive years. The singer knocked X Factor winner Matt Cardle off of the top spot with her latest single, ‘Whats My Name?’

The Barbadian singer has matched the record set by Elvis Presley, releasing Number One singles for five years in a row with ‘Only Girl (In The World)' (2010), 'Run This Town' (2009), 'Take A Bow' (2008) and 'Umbrella' (2006). Rihanna has become the only female solo artist to have ever achieved such a success. The singer also reached the Number Ten spot by way of her collaboration with the successful dance artist David Guetta.

BBC Sound of 2011 winner Jessie J has been enjoying a sales boost from the recent publicity: the singer jumped thirteen places to Number Five with her fierce anthem, ‘Do It Like A Dude’.

In terms of album sales, Rihanna was once again in the top spot, keeping off pressure from a resurgent Plan B with ‘The Defamation Of Strickland Banks'. Take That also slipped down to Number Three with their latest release, ‘Progress’.
