Noah And The Whale - Life Is Life (Single Review)

After the success of Noah and the Whale’s re-release of ‘Five Years Time’ - the single that had everyone whistling and learning to play the ukulele - The band went on to release singles from second album ‘The First Days of Spring’. These songs weren’t as celebrated in the charts, but earned five stars from the Sunday Times and was quoted to be ‘Magical’ from Q magazine. It’s understandable then, that Noah and the Whale might have felt pressure from a few different directions as they prepared to release tracks from the ‘difficult third album’ entitled ‘Last Night on Earth’.

Third single to be released from this album is ‘Life is Life’ following on from previous uplifting singles ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N’ and ‘Last Night On Earth’.

Much like their contemporaries Friendly Fires, the band seem to have taken a much more electronic direction with this track, and it does sound remarkably 80s - which is a pretty good indicator of which direction the next phase in popular music is heading.

For a particularly electronic song, the band have still managed to give it an organic sound, as the keyboards, synths and electric percussion work well to compliment Charlie Fink’s distinctive vocals.

ImageThe song certainly contains a lot of hooks and catchy melodies, and while I was sceptical that it sounded a bit too ‘nice’ on my first listen, I was admittedly singing it to myself for hours afterwards, repeating the phrase “Your life is your life, gotta live like it’s your life” which sounds like it has an almost ‘world music’ influence in the outro.

‘Life is Life’ is certainly an uplifting track, showing that Noah and the Whale are working with a whole host of influences now. There’s also no denying that you’ll be humming this song for days after you’ve heard it!
