Thrash metal icons Metallica are the first band and headliner confirmed to perform at Download Festival 2012.
The news broke shortly after 7.20pm this evening (GMT), announced by the band's drummer Lars Ulrich who was a guest on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio One Evening Show.
Metallica have not played the sacred rock'n'roll grounds of Donington since 2006 and Lars revealed that he is “so looking forward to coming back”, adding that “there is no more of a sacred place to play than Donington”. The headline set will see Metallica play their 1991 'Black Album' in it's entirety.
The special performance, which will cap the bill on Saturday 9th June, will mark the 20th anniversary of the 'Black Album' release, which shoved Metallica up from being one of the biggest Metal bands ever to one of the biggest bands in the world.
Download Festival celebrates it's tenth year in 2012 and takes place at Donington Park from Wednesday 6th June to Tuesday 12th June.
Tickets details for Download 2012 are set to be confirmed soon.
