De La Soul Side-Project First Serve Announce Debut Single

The new side-project from De La Soul’s Plug One and Plug Two – aka Posdnous and Trugoy/Dave – First Serve have announced the release of their debut single ‘Must B The Music’, which is due out on 26th March. The album ‘First Serve’ will follow on 2nd April.

‘First Serve’ is a concept album that tells the story of two friends Deen Whitter (Plug One) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (Plug Two) in a basement, struggling to start their music career. The album takes the listener on a journey through to the point where the duo get to release their debut single and finally “make it big”. Album track ‘Pushin Aside, Pushin Along’ is available to listen to below.

De La Soul’s most recent album release was 2004’s ‘The Grind Date’, the trio’s seventh album to date. Since then, they have collaborated with Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz on several occasions, including on the tracks ‘Feel Good Inc’ (from 2005’s ‘Demon Days’) and ‘Superfast Jellyfish’ (from 2010’s ‘Plastic Beach’). In 2005, the trio received the first Grammy Award of their career for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration for ‘Feel Good Inc’. De La Soul have performed with Gorillaz at many of their recent live shows, including Glastonbury 2010 and the subsequent tour.
