Our Label Were 'Really Worried' About Latest Album, Say The Maccabees

London-based indie rockers the Maccabees have confessed that their record label bosses were ‘really worried’ that their latest album ‘Given to the Wild’, which hit shelves early on in January, was going to be a commercial failure.
‘Given to the Wild’, their third studio album, has managed to make its way up the UK charts – and at one point looked like it was going to manage to top the charts. Although it still managed to end the week at #4, the band have revealed how worried their label was – because they though the record was too experimental to see commercial success.
“[Our label] Fiction were really worried,” guitarist Felix White told the Daily Star. “They thought we were making a concept album. They were talking about a low-key release. They thought it was going to be this lo-fi, weird-sounding record.”
He went on to talk about his surprise that the LP managed to break into the top end of the charts – but also the disappointment of their track narrowly missing the #1 spot.
“We didn't think it would get near the Top 10, let alone nearly hit Number One. It's funny and surreal seeing our name next to Bruno Mars and Adele in the chart. As a Fulham fan, I'm used to last-minute defeats. That sinking feeling when we lost out so late was very familiar.”
