Original Yes Guitarist Peter Banks Dies Age 65

Peter Banks, the original guitarist of English rockers Yes, has sadly passed away aged 65.

The Barnet-born star died at his home in London on Thursday (March 7th), and was reportedly found after failing to turn up to a recording session. The cause is said to be heart failure, according to a post on Banks’ website.

The statement reads: ”It’s with great sadness to have to report the death of Peter Banks. He died in his London home on March 7, 2013 due to heart failure. It is reported Banks was found after not showing up for a recording session.”

His former band Yes have also released a statement, saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of fellow bandmate and founding Yes member, Peter Banks. He was a huge piece of the fabric that made Yes what it is, and our thoughts, sincere condolences, and prayers are with him and his family. Peter, we shall miss you greatly.”

As well as being the original guitarist of Yes, Banks was a talented and well-travelled musician and performed alongside many bands - including The Syn, Flash, and Empire. Described by BBC's Danny Baker and Big George as ‘the architect of progressive music’, he also released a number of solo albums.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Hackett has also commented on Banks’ death via Twitter - saying: “I’m sorry to hear of Peter Banks’ passing… a great pal and a great guitarist. Sweet memories of watching Yes at the Marquee for the first time.”

We at Stereoboard send our thoughts to his friends and family - RIP.
