As a rule of thumb, metal folk are a tad sceptical when it comes to the issue of nepotism. It’s sketchy and, some might say, downright unfair for bands to receive publicity based even partially on their blood ties.

Fronted by Richie Cavalera, – son of metal demi-god Max Cavalera – Incite are one band who could be accused of hanging from the proverbial coattails but, in fact, they have worked their arses off from day one, becoming a well-oiled thrash machine in the process.

With 'Up In Hell', the band have finally nailed their blueprint. Album number three trims the fat, leaving behind 10 blasts of gritty, groove-infused thrash.

With most songs clocking in around the three minute mark, each one delivers its message fast enough to pop Usain Bolt's lungs before paving way for the next dose of brutality.

The title track kicks things off in merciless fashion, boasting a chorus that sounds like a b-side from 'The Great Southern Trendkill'. As any Pantera fan will know, that is a compliment.

The gang vocals during Who Am I, meanwhile, lend a messy, almost urban vibe to an album stacked full of meaty, house-levelling heaviness. They’re not re-inventing the wheel; it’s more like they’re tearing the rubber from it and hurling it into Mount Doom.

Timekeeper and drum-decimator Lennon Lopez is the undoubted hero of the hour throughout, maintaining a solid groove while dishing out flourishes of kick drum that would do nicely as accompaniment to the chest-burster scene from Alien. Backed by a completely new line-up, Cavalera has finally found the men for the job.

With that being said, he also pulls quite a performance out of the bag. Armed with a skin-peeling, paint-stripping scream that brings a slightly more guttural Stitch D to mind, his lyrics are spewed out with the utmost conviction, even on the slightly childish refrain of WTF (follow up LOL expected soon). With that in mind, a guest appearance from Cancer Bats' Liam Cormier on Rightful Spot should be an absolute winner, but the similarities between the two vocalists' screams result in Cormier never truly shining.

'Up In Hell' is a straight-up metal album and if Lamb Of God, Pantera and Sepultura float your boat then you're going to have a field day with it: there are grooves, riffs and drums here to make your guts explode. Incite deserve – and demand – your attention.
