The Monkees bassist Peter Tork (pictured left) has died aged 77.
His sister, Anne Thorkelson, confirmed the news to the Washington Post, though at the time did not divulge the cause of death or further details.
Tork, who also played piano and keyboard in the band, was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma cancer in 2009 but was thought to have subsequently made a full recovery and continued touring following this. However, a statement from his family has confirmed this was not the case: "Peter succumbed to a 10 year bout with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer of the salivary glands."
Born February 13, 1942, he was with the Monkees right from the start in 1966 aged 24 and joined them for reunion tours in the later days. He also took a step away from the band to pursue other projects such as Peter Tork And/Or Release.
