Will Oldham, aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy, has teamed up with Bryce Dessner from the National, and Eighth Blackbird for a new project.
‘When We Are Inhuman’, will arrive on August 30 via the collaborative label 37d03d, run by Dessner and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.
The contemporary classical record will contain arrangements of songs from Oldham’s catalogue and Dessner’s ‘Murder Ballades’, as well as new tracks inspired by Sufjan Stevens and a reworking of Julius Eastman's Stay On It.
The first cut to be released is Beast For Thee, a reinvention of a track from 'Superwolf', Oldham’s collaboration in 2005 with Matt Sweeney. The classical rhythms and structures are all prevalent, though the instrumentation and vocals used give it a relatable and modern twist. Listen below.
