Bodega have announced a new mini album.

‘Shiny New Model’ will arrive on October 11 via What’s Your Rupture?, and follows on from the art-punks’ 2018 debut ‘Endless Scroll’.

The record’s title track marks a change of direction from the angular punk of last year, instead presenting lush, multi-tracked guitars and a more matured rhythm section while still critiquing the absurdity of modern living. The band’s Ben Hozie said:

"The mini LP ‘Shiny New Model’ marks a series of firsts for us: it is our first recording with our new drummer Tai Lee, our first session at a proper studio (Power Station in CT), and the first Bodega disc produced within the group - production was handled by lead guitarist Madison Velding-VanDam. Pushing to be protean we bought a highlighter to different shades of our tastes : more traditionally melodious tune-smithing and bigger sounding sonics —> we even used a kick drum for the first time (although it was still standing on its side). As well as some studio improvising (unusual microphone placement, etc.) - we also experimented with improvising in studio (the vinyl and CD will end with an extended ten-minute version of our song Truth is Not Punishment.)

For the disc’s words I was thinking of two of my favourite motifs —> history alive in the present and the conundrum of the contemporary consumer. There is no way to repay the born-with debts of our plastic paradise  —> every purchase at the local bodega is at somebody else’s expense. The only solution I see is to historicize - not just to understand what influences my thoughts and potential thinking but to project the best self onto the stage for future audiences' view —> history involves not only musing on what the past was but imagining what the past will have been."

The Brooklyn band will support the release on tour in the UK this month after various festival slots around the UK and Europe, including Green Man and End Of The Road

'Shiny New Model' tracklist:

  1. Shiny New Model
  2. Treasures Of The Ancient World
  3. No Vanguard Revival
  4. Knife On The Platter

Bodega - Endless Scroll (Album Review)

Bodega are the art school kids who might sneer at you for Instagramming a picture at their show. They’re the ones who, after a convincing “this isn’t satire”, order their audience to check their emails during the next song. Bodega roll out lines like “I touch myself while staring at your chat text box” and “I use my computer for everything, heaven knows I’m miserable now.” Their message: we are dominated by consumer culture and technology is taking over our lives.

You haven’t truly lived until you’ve heard someone rapping over the bluegrass strains of a banjo.  Or until you’ve experienced the sound of a band who smash together folk, hip hop, EDM, and punk beneath stirring lyrics that make you feel 10 feet tall. Luckily, Judah & the Lion are the wildly talented and eclectic US trio who do all the above and much more.
