Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard And Mason Jennings Unite For Painted Shield Project

Wednesday, 09 September 2020 Written by Jon Stickler

Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and folk singer-songwriter Mason Jennings have confirmed details of their new project, Painted Shield.

The duo are joined by former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain and Seattle keyboardist Brittany Davis for the venture, which materialised after the rock guitarist linked up with Chamberlain for some instrumental demos in 2014.

The recordings have been shelved for the past seven years, but the recent COVID-19 pandemic lockdown allowed the musicians time to enlist Jennings and Davis and complete the record "virtually". Gossard said in a statement:

"I love making music, and I especially love collaborating with other musicians. That’s the fun part, when you experience synchronicity between the music and the people you’re involved with."

Jennings added:

"I've been a huge fan of both Stone and Matt for years. I listen to a lot of electronic and heavy rock music, but most of what I do is my voice and an acoustic guitar. I was excited by the idea of bringing that intimate side of what I do to this mega sound they were creating."

The four-piece, with help from mixer John Congleton, will drop their self-titled debut LP on November 27 via Gossard's rebooted label Loosegroove, notable for releasing Queens of the Stone Age’s debut album in 1998.

Head below to stream the record's ambitious lead single, I Am Your Country, which fills the sonic spectrum with large-scale synth soundscapes, roots rock percussion greatness and elements of contemporary folk-pop.
