Reggae Pioneer Toots Hibbert Dies Aged 77

Saturday, 12 September 2020 Written by Laura Johnson

Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert has died aged 77.

According to a statement, the Toots and the Maytals frontman passed away peacefully on the evening of September 11 at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

Although a cause of death was not shared, his representatives confirmed online in late August that he was in intensive care and awaiting a COVID-19 test. The last update posted prior to the news of his death advised he was in a stable condition and receiving around the clock care.

Toots and the Maytals had recently released their new album, 'Got To Be Tough', which arrived on August 28. The last cut to be shared from the record was a cover of Bob Marley's Three Little Birds featuring vocals by Bob's son Ziggy Marley, Ringo Starr on percussion, Zak Starkey on guitar and drums from Sly Dunbar.

Hibbert is credited as a pioneer of reggae music, helping to create the genre with his 1968 single Do The Reggay. He had a prolific career with the band, which began back in early 1960s, releasing over 20 albums across six decades and touring the world extensively. Even at 77, Hibbert planned to hit the road and tour his new record across the UK, Europe and the US following its release.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Miss D, and his seven of eight children.

It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight,...
