Rammstein - Zeit (Album Review)

With the German metal titans having taken a decade to follow 2009’s ‘Liebe ist für alle da’ with 2019’s untitled album, nobody expected a new Rammstein album so soon, and there was naturally a worry that the band might be phoning it in with such a short turnaround. But they have never been ones to do what is expected, and with ‘Zeit’ they’re again out to prove that.

Opening with Armee der Tristen, where pulsating synths and an industrial stomp carry the unmistakable Rammstein groove, Till Lindemann’s iconic baritone surges into the fray. The next two songs, the title track and Schwarz, however, detour from this template significantly and offer a far more contemplative mood, particularly Zeit, which laments loss and the passage of time.

The normally grandiose, imperious band have clearly been affected by the last few years, and use it as fuel to deliver a far more emotional album than might have been expected, especially given the short time between releases.

That’s not to say it’s all balladry and contemplation, though. Second single Zick Zack, with its accompanying music video, mixes in a techno beat to their Neue Deutsche Härte blueprints amid themes of seeking perfection or delaying the march of time through plastic surgery. Dicke Titten, meanwhile, brings in the sounds of a marching band to its stomping, pompous chorus.

Another curveball is reserved for the heavily autotuned singing of Lügen, which still manages to retain its industrial edge. The closing Adieu is classically ambiguous—is it just the close to an album or is it more: a band bowing out on their own terms, in their own time? Swan song or not, this is Rammstein at their most honest and imperious.
