Ty Segall - Three Bells (Album Review)

Thursday, 01 February 2024 Written by Tom Morgan

You might group Ty Segall with Osees and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard as shape-shifting modern practitioners of psychedelic rock. Following them is fun because of each act’s gentle unpredictability — you never quite know what’s coming next and if you don't like it, something different will arrive soon anyway.

Segall’s 15th album (not including releases as a member of killer bands such as Fuzz and The C.I.A.) is another quirky left turn in a career defined by them. ‘Three Bells’ finds the California auteur jettisoning the gentle folk-rock of its predecessor ‘Hello, Hi’ and turning in a fabulous exercise in uniquely weird prog-psych.

A screeching, hissing and densely-arranged collection, these 15 tracks are nonetheless an affable and mostly engrossing ride. I Hear, Hi Dee Dee and Eggman are full of squealing guitars that appear and suddenly vanish, slashing colourful fissures through a bizarre but light-on–its-feet palette.

‘Three Bells’ is practically bursting with colourful strangeness; brash interruptions of electric guitar, the odd scales that bust out on Move and Void, the unexpected jazz of Denée or the surprisingly accessible standout My Room.

Segall has made a fascinating album that is both highly original, sometimes resplendent and occasionally off-putting. It’s rare to hear an album that is both gentle and abrasive, but Segall has pulled it off here, veering between the highs and lows of a summer’s day acid trip.
