Mamalarky - Hex Key (Album Review)

Tuesday, 22 April 2025 Written by Matthew McLister

On their third album, indie outfit Mamalarky venture further into unpredictability and eclecticism through 13 excellent, sun-kissed songs. Where other bands of this ilk might prioritise consistency throughout an album, this Los Angeles-via-Atlanta quartet’s latest thrives thanks to that ability to combine variety with a central vibe that emphasises breezy cool.

‘Hex Key’ was produced in the band’s home studio, with guitarist-vocalist Livvy Bennett and keyboardist Michael Hunter compelled to further their sonic exploration after working behind the desk on music for other artists.

The results are impressive. Broken Bones is an earworm of an opener, offering a contrast between its execution — a tight rock sound and catchy chorus — and theme, with Bennett delivering lyrics that offer a sense of insecurity: “I would never let my feelings show, let my feelings show when you come around” shyly admits Bennett.”

Mamalarky then up the stakes on the similarly upbeat Won’t Give Up — a match-up between powerful bass grooves and shimmering synths. Following this is the airy The Quiet, which sounds an awfully lot like a retro video game while rounding out an opening trio that encapsulates the daring diversity of the LP as a whole.

The album’s mid-section continues the early momentum. Anhedonia carries an irresistible slacker-rock vibe, #1 Best of All Time is a two-minute thrill of dizzying backbeats and off-key vocals, while MF’s psych-rock is another exciting change up.

Later, the woozy synths on Nothing Last Forever, glittering keys on Feels So Wrong and Khruangbin-esque guitar work on Here’s Everything are a scintillating kiss off. ‘Hex Key’ is a captivating return from Mamalarky — funky, fuzzy and brilliant from start to finish.
