Beach Bunny - Tunnel Vision (Album Review)

Beginning life as a bedroom-pop solo venture by Chicago-based musician Lili Trifilio as a petty move to get back at an ex, over the past decade Beach Bunny has evolved into something far bigger than she could have anticipated.

After finding viral fame with body-positivity anthem Prom Queen during the early days of TikTok, Trifilio’s soul-baring reflections on relationships and the complexities of love became the now-trio’s signature on 2020’s ‘Honeymoon’ and its 2022 follow-up ‘Emotional Creature’.

But with album three comes a change in perspective. Self-critical and deeply introspective, ‘Tunnel Vision’ is wrought with uncertainty, exploring the confusion and chaos that comes with navigating life in a fractured world.

Merging melancholic longing with bubblegum pop hooks, its 10 tracks are hopelessly bleak while glistening with an unshakeable brightness.

From the bouncy-yet-cutthroat analysis of the world’s failings on Violence to the glossy synth-pop revamp of Cycles – a lo-fi track originally released under Trifilio’s own name in 2019 — that closes out the release, each and every existential thought is delivered with a half-smile.

Given that this is also the first time Beach Bunny — completed by drummer Jon Alvarado and guitarist Anthony Vaccaro — have written a record together, their growth as musicians is also on full display here. Chasm and Pixie Cut remain safely in the realms of their guitar-centric mall-punk niche, but the piano and synths of Vertigo and Mr. Predictable bring a refreshing progression, every note bound by polished production.

With no obvious solutions to the seemingly endless slew of dilemmas life throws our way, ‘Tunnel Vision’ is a collection of songs that acknowledges anxieties that are now nearly impossible to ignore. Putting a voice to the self-doubt and frustration that comes with adhering to social norms and finding our place in an ever-shifting world, its swift sub-30-minute runtime serves as a collective sigh of discontentment with modern life, wrapped up in some of the tightest indie-pop songs you’ll hear this year.
