Ed Sheeran has shared a third song from his upcoming album.
Serving up a bright, rousing pop sound that's infused with cultural influences, the track includes backing vocals from legendary Indian artist Arijit Singh. It arrives with a Liam Pethick-directed video, featuring Singh and a cameo from actor Shah Rukh Khan, below. Sheeran commented:
"Sapphire was the first song I finished for 'Play' that made me know where the album was heading. It's why I finished the recording process in Goa surrounded by some of the best musicians in India. It was an incredible creative process. I shot the music video with Liam and Nic across my India tour earlier this year, we wanted to showcase the beauty and breadth of the country and its culture. The final jigsaw piece for me was getting Arijit on the record. It was a journey to get there and such an amazing day of music and family. Me and him have done a full Punjabi version of the song that will come out in the next few weeks, which has a lot more of him on it. This is the album version of the song, and my favourite song on the album. Hope you guys love it. x"
Sapphire follows the previously unveiled singles Old Phone and Azizam in previewing Sheeran's new album, 'Play', the follow-up to his 'Mathematics' run of albums (2011's '+', 2014's 'x', 2017's '÷', 2021's '=' and 2023's '-'), due out on September 12.
He'll play three shows at Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club, in July, joined by Myles Smith and Tori Kelly on the first date, Busted and Dylan the second, and James Blunt and Maisie Peters the third.
He'll also resume his Mathematics World Tour with the first of two consecutive shows in Marseille, France tonight (June 6). Tickets are on sale now.
