Dream Nails have returned with a new single, This Is Water.
Created with producer and engineer Ali Chant, the track arrives via Marshall Records and finds the London-based punk trio embracing a more experimental sound.
It follows last October's single, Control, which marked their first new music since becoming a three-piece, with bassist Mimi Jasson now also on vocals. On the new song, she said:
"We are so lucky to have worked with Ali on this song. He has worked with some true British icons. With Ali, we indulged in our playful edge, experimenting with pedals and exploring sounds that teased out the themes of the song. When I said I wanted my voice to evoke something intimate on This is Water, he ran my vocals through a Hammond organ, the rotating Leslie speaker created a sound that resembles being underwater."
Drummer Lucy Katz added: "This song is inspired by a speech given by the late writer David Foster Wallace, who tells a story about two fish swimming along in the ocean. One fish remarks, ‘The water’s nice today!’ to which the other fish replies, ‘What’s water?’
"We are immersed in ourselves! The lyrics convey the idea of becoming so stuck in our own sticky experiences and identities that we struggle to truly relate to one another. We are all fish, and we are all swimming."
Guitarist Anya Pearson said: "The lyrics came from freewriting together, selecting lines and ideas that we wanted to connect like a deconstructed jigsaw puzzle. We're embracing our weird side, walking a tightrope between the personal and the surreal."
The trio are currently working on the follow-up to 2023's 'Doom Loop' LP. Katz previously revealed: "We’re dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on our third LP right now and will be heading back to the studio shortly to lay our baby down."
Dream Nails will play 2000trees festival next month.
