The Band Camino - NeverAlways (Album Review)

Thursday, 31 July 2025 Written by Maddy Howell

For the past decade, The Band Camino have lived at the intersection of emotional turmoil and euphoria. Doubling down on both counts with a sharp sense of clarity, the Nashville-based trio have hit the sweet spot on their third studio album, ‘NeverAlways’.

Opening with the nostalgia-drenched shimmer of HasJustBegun, a summery haze gives way to the existential Pieces, a starkly self-aware indie-pop cut that sees vocalist Jeffery Jordan grappling with the pressure of living up to potential.

Here, the tone is set for an album that leans into the push and pull of growing up, caught between the desire to move forward, and the dull ache of what’s been left behind.

What You Can’t Have is a breezy, country-tinged jab at a former flame, while Limbo takes a gentler approach, its soft piano intro melting into a dreamy windows-down anthem for late-night drives.

It’s in these melancholic singalongs that the trio thrive, and luckily there’s no shortage of those moments on ‘NeverAlways’. The huge, pop-punk tinged chorus of Baggy Jeans leans into gutting desperation, while Stupid Questions is a regretful anthem of barely contained frustration wrapped in slick hooks.

Elsewhere, acoustic ballad Hates Me Yet (222) wallows in self-loathing and obsessive doubt, and Me Around You offers a tender, anxious meditation on vulnerability and the terrifying act of being seen. With lyrics that feel like they have been torn straight from a teenage diary, it’s a formula that remarkably rarely feels self-indulgent — even the sickly-sweet, 2000s rom-com soundtrack notes of Karaoke, a soaring ode to romantic inevitability, feel sincere.

As the pop-rock explosion of Infinity closes us out, ‘NeverAlways’ is all big feelings and heart-on-sleeve charm, navigating extremes and realising that life mostly happens somewhere in between. The Band Camino have come close to perfecting the art of coming-of-age anthems.
