The Beths Tease 'Straight Line Was A Lie' With New Single Mother, Pray For Me

The Beths have shared another song from their upcoming fourth album.
Poignant and deeply personal, the bare-bones Mother, Pray For Me blends delicate guitar lines with heartfelt lyrics that explore vocalist Elizabeth Stokes' relationship with her mother, who is Indonesian. She said:
"I cried the whole time writing it. It's not really about my mother, it's about me —what I hope our relationship is, what I think it is, what it maybe actually is, and what I can or can't expect out of it.
"My mother is a first gen Indonesian immigrant, and very Catholic. I was born in Jakarta and we moved to Auckland when I was four. I think this song is me trying to understand my relationship with my mum, and her relationship to her faith and with her own mother. It was hard to write. We came up with a full band arrangement for the song, but in the end it seemed to feel the clearest with just me and the guitar. And a bit of organ."
It marks the third preview of 'Straight Line Was A Lie', and comes paired with a video directed by Annabel Kean and Callum Devlin. Previously, the New Zealand indie-rockers teased the album with the singles No Joy and Metal.
The four-piece will celebrate the follow-up to 2022's 'Expert In A Dying Field', which is out on August 29, with UK, European and North American tour dates between mid-September and mid-December. Tickets are on sale now.
