Militarie Gun - God Save The Gun (Album Review)

Wednesday, 22 October 2025 Written by Tom Morgan

Now that hardcore is as popular as it’s ever been, the first half of the 2020s has given rise to a host of broadly successful post-hardcore (to flagrantly misuse that term) genre fusions. Militarie Gun play an alt-rock-hardcore blend, throwing a whole spectrum of influences, such as emo, shoegaze and even Britpop in with their harder-edged tendencies.

The band have done immensely well over the last couple of years, from being featured on various game soundtracks to becoming friends with Post Malone, and they’ve duly thrown the kitchen sink at their second full-length ‘God Save The Gun’.

Whereas their 2023 debut was a raw, pared-back collection, these 14 tracks overflow with big-budget studio adornments: synths, drum machines, vocal overdubs and endless guitar effects.

This choice mostly works, notably on some spectacular highlights. God Owes Me Money might be their best  song – a perfect emo-tinged anthem with monster vocal hooks. Laugh At Me is also wonderful, a jangly indie-pop banger that pushes vocalist Ian Shelton to new loved-up confessional realms.

The studio affectations occasionally feel a bit too rich. Maybe I’ll Burn My Life Down is the prime culprit. It’s like a well-constructed but over-stuffed meal that ultimately leaves you unsatisfied. However, other than one or two of such moments, ‘God Save The Gun’ is a vibrant success. Militarie Gun have a ruthless knack for hooks and melodies which, combined with Shelton’s strikingly honest lyrics, means that the album courses with energy and feeling.
