Jim James has anounced his first solo recording in eight years.

'Wowed Out' is set for release through ATO Records on August 28 and finds the My Morning Jacket frontman reworking a collection of music originally written for two major film projects in the early 2010s into a new album of soulful psychedelia.

The self-produced record started to take shape in autumn 2025, when he went through recordings he'd made with his longtime friend, award-winning composer Brian Reitzell, whose credits include Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides.

Mixed with engineer Emily Lazar, who has previously worked with David Bowie, David Byrne and Beck, it comprises 10 tracks and is described as a "dream project" by the Kentucky-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He explained:

“For years I kept returning to all this music we’d made and couldn’t figure out what to do with it. But for some reason, last year everything started flowing in a really beautiful way."

As a preview, the Grammy-nominated artist has shared the record's reflective first single, Come Again, a soulful and melodic offering that blends elements of psych-rock, folk and pop. He said: "Come Again came from feeling discouraged by how much things are changing in directions I don’t agree with, but trying to remember that there’s still so much beauty to be experienced. You’ve got to just keep going and keep trying again and again and again to find joy."

"There’ve been times in my life where I’ve felt lost or depressed, but music has always been the thing that pulls me back,” James explained. "When I think about making this album, it almost feels like I was in some kind of dream and now I’m trying to remember what the dream was about. The whole thing brought me a lot of joy and comfort while I was making it, and I hope it brings everyone else a little joy and comfort too."

James will join Beck, Jackson Browne, Bill Murray, Britt Daniel and others for Music From The Films of Wes Anderson at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl between July 10 and 12. He’ll also headline a solo acoustic set at the annual Song Summit in Park City, Utah on August 28. Head here for details.

James' last solo album was 2018's 'Uniform Distortion', which was followed by a companion record titled 'Uniform Clarity'. The following year, he collaboration with Teddy Abrams and the Louisville Orchestra for 'The Order Of Nature'. Last October, he featured on Don't Let 'Em (Get Inside of Your Head), a track by Canadian singer-songwriter Julian Taylor.

My Morning Jacket will play a seven-night residency at the Fillmore in San Francisco between October 3 and 1, tickets for which are on sale now. They released their latest studio album, 'Is', last year and this May put out 'Peacelands', an "album of acoustic peaceful protest songs".
