Bauhaus are a four-piece classic rock band from Northampton, England, composed of Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass). Venerated and highly influential, the band emerged from the post-punk alternative music scene of the early 80s with a string of innovative albums and a powerfully dramatic live presentation. Their music embodies a minimalistic, disconsolate style of post-punk rock unlike any other.
After only six weeks as a band, Bauhaus entered the studio for the first time at Beck Studios in Wellingborough to record a demo. One of the five tracks recorded during the session, Bela Lugosi's Dead, more than nine minutes long, was released as the group's debut single in August 1979 on Small Wonder Records. After signing to 4AD, the band released some more singles including Dark Entries and Terror Couple Kill Colonel in Jun 1980, before releasing their debut album 'In The Flat Field' later that year.
'Mask' came in 1981, followed by 'The Sky's Gone Out' and 'Burning From The Inside' in the proceeding years. Bauhaus disbanded in 1983, but reunited for the Resurrection Tour in 1998, and again in 2005. They released a final album, 'Go Away White' in 2008.
In 2018, Bauhaus will release a previously unheard demo session from 1979 just weeks after they formed. 'The Bela Session' is due for release in November, accompanied by Australia, Europe and UK live shows.
