Charlene Soraia - When We Were Five - (Single Review)

When We Were Five, is Charlene Soraia’s debut single, due for release on the 9th August, taken from her debut album, Moonchild, which is due for release in October.

Charlene was accepted to London’s BRIT school, due to her musical talents, which has helped artists such as Imogen Heap and Katie Melua to flourish.

Her debut single is six and a half minutes long and can certainly not be categorised as your normal pop song, it is a single which certainly shows great talent and diversity, however it somehow fails to capture me.

When We Were Five is more of a dreamy lullaby then a track. It is a steady, yet chaotic flow of tranquil strummed guitar, mystical samples and trumpets which progressively grows in stature with Charlene’s very unique and chilling vocals over the top.

For all its beauty, it is very much lacking in its overall presentation, with very little structure or flow, I like a track that alters itself, providing different layers for the listener, however the lack of compassion for each stage of the track is a real disappointment.

The ideas are all there and the sound is too, it is how all the components are put together where the problem lies. Like a great meal, not only does it need a great chef, it also needs great ingredients. This track then has all the right ingredients; however the chef has struggled a little with the presentation.

It shows great ambition and vocal talent though and a desire to do things a little different and I admire that greatly.
